Kids' Pillow Size by Age (2026 Guide): The Right Height for a Toddler, a 5-Year-Old or a Tween

Three kids' pillow sizes labelled ages 1-3, ages 3-8 and ages 8-14

Updated November 2026 · By Kovalya, a Canadian brand

Short answer: a child needs a much lower pillow than an adult, and the right height grows with them: very low for a toddler (about 2–4 cm), low for ages 3 to 8 (about 4–6 cm), and a bit higher for ages 8 to 14 (about 6–9 cm). The goal is simple: when your child lies down, the head stays level with the spine instead of being pushed up or sinking down.

Transparency: we sell a kids' pillow in three heights, in Canada. The size table uses our own dimensions; the fit check works with any pillow.

Pillow height by age

Age Pillow height Pillow size Profile
1–3 years (once in a bed) About 2–4 cm 50 × 30 cm Very low
3–8 years About 4–6 cm 50 × 30 cm Low
8–14 years About 6–9 cm 54 × 32 cm Medium

Age is a starting point. A small 8-year-old may still fit the 3–8 height; a tall 7-year-old with broad shoulders who sleeps on the side may need the next one.

The 30-second fit check

  • On the back: the chin should not be pushed toward the chest. If it is, the pillow is too high.
  • On the side: the head should stay in line with the spine, not tilted down toward the mattress (too low) or up toward the ceiling (too high).
  • In the morning: if the pillow keeps ending up on the floor, it is often too tall or too firm for the child.

Why an adult pillow does not fit a child

Adult pillows are made for adult shoulders. On a child, they usually lift the head too high, which bends the neck forward on the back and sideways on the side. A pillow sized for their age simply keeps things level.

What parents choose

From our own orders: about half of the pillows ordered are the 8–14 size, and about 7 in 10 orders include two or more pillows, usually one per child or a spare for the grandparents' home.

The Kovalya Kids Neck-Support Pillow

The Kids Neck-Support Pillow comes in the three heights above, with a contoured shape and a cool, breathable removable cover. It is tested by an independent laboratory against the EN 71-1, EN 71-2 and EN 71-3 toy-safety standards. Sold in Canada, from CA$94.99 for one pillow (November 2026).

Important: a pillow is not a medical treatment. If your child's neck pain keeps coming back, or comes with a fever, headache or unusual sleepiness, see a doctor.

FAQ

What size pillow does a 5-year-old need?

A low pillow, about 4–6 cm high. In our range, that is the 3–8 size, 50 × 30 cm.

When can a child use an adult pillow?

Usually not before the early teens, when the shoulders are close to adult width. Until then, an adult pillow is often too high.

Should a toddler have a pillow?

Only once they sleep in a bed, never in a crib. See our guide: when can a toddler start using a pillow.

My child sleeps on the stomach. Which height?

Go for the lowest height that suits their age: stomach sleepers need very little lift.
