Heated Shawl Buying Guide (2026): Heat Levels, Battery Life, Safety and Washing

Woman working at a desk wearing the WarmHalo heated shawl in Apricot

Updated November 2026 · By Kovalya, a Canadian brand

Short answer: a good heated shawl warms your neck, shoulders and back, closes at the front so it stays on, has real, stated temperatures for each heat level, overheat protection, runs long enough on battery for an evening, and can go in the washing machine. Most cheap listings skip half of these details. Below we explain what to check, then give the full spec sheet of our own WarmHalo™, including what it does not do, so you can compare it fairly with any other model.

Transparency: we sell the WarmHalo™ Heated Shawl, so we are not neutral. Every number below comes from the manufacturer's specification sheet (model HR-P1) or from a calculation we show.

The 7 things to check before buying a heated shawl

  1. Coverage. Look for heating across the neck, shoulders and upper back, not one small pad.
  2. A front closure. A zip or snaps keep the shawl on when you move. Without one, it slides off like a blanket.
  3. Stated temperatures. Three levels is the usual standard. Check the actual temperature of each level, not just “fast heating”.
  4. Overheat protection. The heating wire should have a temperature sensor that cuts the heat if it runs too hot.
  5. How it is powered. Built-in battery, USB power bank, or wall plug. This decides where you can use it and for how long.
  6. Washing. The heat controller and the battery must come off so the shawl itself can be washed.
  7. Clear specifications. Voltage, wattage, size and materials should be written down. If a listing hides them, be careful.

What it does not do: it has no built-in battery and no listed auto shut-off timer, and a 5V USB shawl gives a gentler warmth than a wall-powered heated blanket. For heat in bed all night, a heated blanket is the better tool.

How long does a USB heated shawl run on a power bank?

A power bank's capacity is printed in mAh. To estimate run time on the high setting, convert it to watt-hours (mAh × 3.7 V ÷ 1000), keep about 85% for conversion losses, then divide by the shawl's 10 W.

Power bank Usable energy Estimated run time on high
5,000 mAh about 16 Wh about 1.5 hours
10,000 mAh about 31 Wh about 3 hours
20,000 mAh about 63 Wh about 6 hours

These are our estimates from the 10 W rating, not stopwatch tests of every power bank. For one evening on the couch, a 10,000 mAh power bank is the sweet spot. At a desk, plug it into a USB wall plug or a computer and it runs as long as you like.

Built-in battery or USB power bank?

  • Built-in battery: nothing extra to buy, but when it is empty you wait for it to recharge, and the battery ages with the garment.
  • USB power bank (WarmHalo™): use a power bank you already own, swap it for a full one in seconds, or run it from a wall plug or a laptop. The shawl itself has no battery to wear out.

Heated shawl vs heated blanket

Heated shawl Heated blanket
Shoulders and neck Excellent Good
Legs Yes, laid over the lap Excellent
Working at a desk Excellent, hands free Awkward
Moving around Yes, no cord with a power bank No, plugged into the wall
All night in bed No, unplug before sleeping Yes

Many people who are always cold use both: a heated blanket at night, a heated shawl during the day.

Safety basics

  • Unplug the shawl before you go to sleep.
  • Remove the heat button and power bank before washing, and let the shawl dry fully before using it again.
  • Do not use it if the cable or button is damaged.
  • Start on low (35 °C) and go up only if you need to.

FAQ

How hot does a heated shawl get?

The WarmHalo™ has 3 levels: 35 °C (95 °F), 45 °C (113 °F) and 55 °C (131 °F), according to the manufacturer. The button's light shows the level: blue, white, red.

Does it have overheat protection?

Yes. The manufacturer specifies a heating wire with a built-in temperature-sensing protection line, an insulation layer and a flame-retardant sheath.

Does it turn off automatically?

The manufacturer does not list an auto shut-off timer, so switch it off or unplug it when you are done, and always before sleeping.

Does it come with a battery?

No. It runs on any USB power bank (inner pocket) or a USB wall plug, 5V, 2A recommended.

How long does the battery last?

On high, about 3 hours with a 10,000 mAh power bank and about 6 hours with a 20,000 mAh one, by our calculation above.

Is it machine washable?

Yes, once the heat button and power bank are removed.

Can it warm my legs too?

Yes. Unzip it and lay it flat over your lap: it becomes a heated lap blanket.

Is a USB heated shawl as warm as a heated blanket?

It is gentler, but it sits right against your neck, shoulders and back and stays there while you move. For sitting and working, that is often more useful than a blanket that slips off.
